To celebrate National Spaghetti day, I’m sharing a simple spaghetti recipe that you can customize to your family’s liking. Spaghetti sauce is traditionally simple with few ingredients in the sauce but here in North American we add endless variations to the delicious Italian recipe. Traditionally, you don’t usually add ground beef to the sauce, it is topped with meatballs instead. You’ll need:

One batch Classic Meatballs recipe

4-5 servings of your favourite spaghetti pasta

Basic Spaghetti Sauce (ingredients and instructions below!)

    1-2 tbsp. olive oil
  • c
    ¼ cup diced white onion
  • c
    2 tsp minced garlic
  • c
    1 (15 oz.) can tomato sauce
  • c
    1 15(oz.) sauce diced tomatoes (seasoned if you prefer)
  • c
    1 (6 oz.) can of tomato paste
  • c
    1-2 tsp Italian seasoning (adjust to taste)
  • c
    ½ tsp black pepper
  • c
    ½ tsp salt
  • c
    1-2 tsp sugar (adjust to taste)
  • c
    ½ tsp red pepper flakes
  • c
    2-3 tbsp. Parmesan or Romano cheese
  • Directions

      Prepare the batch of classic meatballs and keep warm in oven.

      Combine the oil and diced onions into a large sauce pan. Sauté until the onion is tender. Add in the garlic, fry until brown. Add in the remaining sauce ingredients, excepting the cheese, and stir until combined. Simmer for 20-30 minutes, adjusting the spices to your taste. Right before serving, stir in the cheese and let simmer for another 3-4 minutes.
