Homemade pizza is so much fun to make. I like to whip up a bunch of homemade pizza dough (yes, you have to knead it and let it rise, but it really isn’t too hard to make) and then come up with a few different toppings for variety and to accommodate everyone’s tastes. If you invite a few friends over and have different pizzas coming in and out of the oven all night long, it makes for a fun and easy kitchen party.

Now, you can always throw tomato sauce, pepperoni and mozzarella cheese or ham and pineapple on some pizza dough and have a great meal. But part of the fun of making your own pizza is experimenting with the toppings. Here are some less-than-usual ideas to get you started:

  1. Butter Chicken

Saucy and tangy butter chicken makes for a delicious pizza. Start with an easy butter chicken recipe (this one will work) with the chicken cut into fairly small pieces. I like to cook it down a little more than I would if I were serving it over rice, to thicken it up so it doesn’t make the pizza soggy. Then, simply spread it on the pizza and top with a little bit of shredded mozzarella and some banana peppers.

  1. Breakfast Pizza

Is this breakfast for dinner or dinner for breakfast? Either way, a nice runny egg not only looks great on a pizza also topped with breakfast-friendly ingredients like bacon and cheddar cheese and a bit of tomato sauce, but when you break the yolk, it will also spread nicely over the pizza. For a variation, try scrambled eggs and bacon on top of your pizza.

  1. Savoury Fruit Pizzas

Many fruits go beautifully with a nice salty cheese or meat on a pizza. Pear and gorgonzola is a stand-by combo in restaurants, and also easy to recreate at home. You can also try peaches and prosciutto (wait until fresh peaches are in season), strawberries with balsamic vinegar and bacon, or for something a bit sweeter, berries with goat cheese or ricotta.

  1. Potato Pizza

Starch on starch seems like it may be a bit much, but potatoes make for an amazing pizza topping. There are a few ways to go here (potatoes are great with goat cheese and a drizzle of honey, or you can try to recreate Boston Pizza’s classic spicy perogy pizza), but this potato pizza with caramelized onions and rosemary is particularly elegant.

  1. Dessert Pizza

There are so many options for dessert pizza — you can go with berries and a sweet cheese, cookies and cream, caramel with apples or bananas, nutella and strawberries, or even s’mores toppings.
