Whooboy, it’s getting hot out there! You won’t hear me complaining because our season is so short, we need to enjoy the sunshine and warm weather while it’s here. Still, there comes a point when things might get a bit uncomfortable and when sitting in the house to avoid the heat causes a bit of cabin fever. No more, here are 5 ways to stay cool this summer.

Don’t cook

That old saying of ‘if you can’t stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen,’ is pretty apropos however, what if the heat is everywhere? Well, just don’t cook! Some days even standing over the bbq is too much. So what do you do for dinner instead? Grab a rotisserie chicken from the deli and a bag of salad from the produce department. Don’t forget a bottle of dressing and you have an easy Chicken Caesar Salad for your family to enjoy. No cooking! We have this quite often, even during the winter, because it’s such an easy time saver for busy nights.

Grab a Cool Drink

You need to stay hydrated and replace lost electrolytes. See some cool summer drink recipes here.

Eat Something Cold

Sure there’s ice cream and slush drinks and popsicles but trust me, you’re going to want to try a Granita.

Get in the water!

You might not have a pool in your backyard but chances are you have one in your community. Go take a dip! Check out your local rivers and lakes too. If you can find a spot in the shade near some water you’ll be loads happier and the temp is sure to be a few degrees cooler. If that’s not something you’re into, consider setting up a sprinkler in your yard. Even just sitting outside as the sprinkler runs will bring you some relief. Be sure to adhere to any watering restrictions you might have in your community. If none of those will do it, try making a water blob!

Find some A/C

Going to the movies is one of my favourite things to do when it’s super hot out. A little popcorn, a little distraction and some cool air. Other places to find refuge are the mall, the grocery store, and don’t forget the library! If all those fail you, DIY a small, portable A/C unit for your home!

No matter how hot it is out there, the weather will pass eventually. I hope these tips keep you cool until then. Happy Summer
